The Creative Writing Workshop
“Writing is
a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to
survive as individuals.”
(Don DeLillo)
What is Creative Writing?
Creative writing is anything where the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information.
Especially for POAD, it is an important tool for communication, and Self-empowerment. The ability to tell “our own stories” enables us to understand better the processes of our cultural development in their historical context. It can also be used as a guideline for others and a survival tool for people who would like to deal better with the experiences, transformations, and occurrences in their lifetime.
The Creative Writing Workshop is for those who wish to improve their creative flow of ideas constructively and legibly into the English language.
We’ll spend the time writing, critiquing, boosting creativity, discussing crafts, putting it into a legible and interesting form and in learning what keeps a reader’s attention.
In this Workshop we will work on and talk about:
Does the story go beyond being predictable and trite at any point?
Is the story creative in its introduction of characters and themes?
Is it true to life and to the experience of the writer, or has there been enough research for it to be true to life?
Has the setting been clearly created so that the reader has a vivid mental picture? Is it realistic according to the characters and the time
Is there a central conflict? Is there a clear purpose to the end of the story?
Is the dialogue realistic? Plus: Is the dialogue engaging?
Has it been well formulated?
